Be a Hero: Volunteer Training Starts Next Week

Would you like to assist The Salvation Army this summer in our relief efforts in Joplin, MO? Our greatest need is for volunteers assist in our feeding programs. We currently have 4 mobile canteens and 2 fixed feeding stations in place in Joplin, service more than 1,000 people daily. In addition we’ve set up one stop social services shop near the lot of our thrift store that was destroyed by the tornado to help residents begin the slow process of getting

back on their feet. It’s going to be a long journey and The Salvation Army will be there as long as needed. We need volunteers to help serve on the canteens or at the feeding stations. Volunteers will be deployed for one week at a time, no more than 2 weeks. Salvation Army provides housing during deployment.

Volunteers must have completed Introduction to Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services and Disaster Food Safety training. We have scheduled two training session cycles for next week and hope that you will be able to join us for one of the sessions:

Introduction to EDS – Monday, June 20, 9am-1pm OR Thursday, June 23, 9am-1pm
Disaster Food Safety – Tuesday, June 21, 9am-5pm OR Friday, June 24, 9am-5pm

The trainings will be located at our headquarters, located at 1130 Hampton Avenue, at the corner of Wise, south of I-64. You can sign up online here:

We will be scheduling additional trainings over the next few weeks and months so if these dates do not work for you, please select “Emergency Disaster Services Volunteer” under activities to receive notice of additional training times. In addition to our on-going relief efforts in Joplin, we are preparing for the anticipated flooding in our surrounding areas. So if you are not able to serve in Joplin this summer, but would like to help locally, please sign up for training.
