A woman’s work is never done.

More than 100 years of women doing good throughout Missouri and Illinois

By: Major Patty Richardson, Midland Division, Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries

The Women’s Ministries program of The Salvation Army began in the late 1800’s as an effort to improve the lives and living conditions of the women in the areas The Army served.  Home-making, parenting and personal development were some of the skills taught through weekly meetings at a Salvation Army corps building and through home visits.

Auxiliary members participate in the 2010 WA Fashion Show.

Today, the program centers around four areas: education, fellowship, worship and service. These four areas provide the framework for varied activities especially designed for the social, personal and spiritual development of women. Each corps/community center in the Midland Division has a Women’s Ministries program that is tailored to the women in the community where the corps is located. These programs are open to all women.

Trips, speakers, seminars, events, parties, retreats, small groups and service projects are just some of the ways women are served, do acts of service, and are ministered to. The most recent activity for the women of the division was out Women’s Retreat weekend. This event was designed as a spiritual refreshment and growth opportunity, designed around the theme, “Taking Off Our Masks”. Over 200 women joined together for the retreat which was held at our Camp Mihaska in Bourbon, Missouri. Saturday afternoon classes provided opportunity for the women to learn new skill, and try out some new activities, and make new friends throughout the weekend.

Another aspect of Women’s Ministries in Missouri and Southern Illinois is the Women’s Auxiliary Auxiliaries are comprised of community women who which to support the mission and outreach of The Salvation Army through fund raising and volunteerism for the local corps/community centers.

There are six auxiliaries in the Midland Division: Springfield, MO., Belleville, IL., Quincy, IL., Jacksonville, IL., Mattoon, IL., and the St. Louis Regional Auxiliary which is the largest and oldest in the division. The St. Louis Auxiliary holds fund raisers throughout the year, an Arts & Crafts Boutique in November, Fashion Show and silent auction in April, and Christmas card sales. These activities help the community centers to secure items that enhance the community outreach and ministry. Auxiliary members also volunteer and assist with programs such as Christmas assistance distribution and Community Care outreach visits to the local VA facilities.

The Women’s Auxiliary’s throughout out division are wonderful partners with The Salvation Army in our efforts to serve our communities.
